Line-up
: V Santura (guitare), Morean (chant), Draug (basse), Asvargr (guitare), Seraph (batterie), Paymon (claviers)

Discographie : Towards Immortality (Split-MCD, 1997), Tales From Eternal Dusk (2001), Profane Genocidal Creations (2003), Stab Wounds (2004), Séance (2006), Eidolon (2008)

Metal-Impact.

V Santura. Fais ce que tu veux ! (ndr : Do what Thou Wilt, maxime rendue célébre par Aleister Crowley).

==================== ENGLISH VERSION ====================

Metal-Impact. Hello. Can you tell us more about the reasons why Azathoth left the band? What about his successor, Morean? How does his voice differ from Azathoth's?
V Santura. Azathoth left the band due to personal reasons, the “chemistry” within the band didn’t work already since a longer time. Therefore we wanted to play much more live than he wanted or could and so it happened that the frustration got bigger and bigger for each of us. Finally he decided to leave the band. He offered us to still record the new album, but we didn’t want to record an album with a singer, that has already decided to leave the band. Anyhow I have to admit, that he was a great vocalist and brilliant lyric-writer.
We are very glad that we found Morean and we are very satisfied with his contribution to this band. His voice is not totally different from Azathoth’s voice, I think that the band was able to maintain its identity. Morean’s voice is maybe a bit darker and more mysterious, while one of Azathoth’s strengths was to intonate rather desperate emotions.

MI. Your new singer is responsible for the concept of this new album. Was he asked to find one or did he just come with it when he joined DARK FORTRESS?
V Santura. Morean is a very creative person and we knew before that he is a very good lyric writer. None of the rest of the band feels the strong wish to express himself through lyrics, so we all thought that it would be the best idea, when Morean was going to take care of the lyrical concept. He has made different experiences with occult subjects and has a profound knowledge about it, so there is a deep source from which he can take his ideas.

MI. When you composed the music of Eidolon, were the lyrics already written or did you just have a general frame?
V Santura. Initially there was a different lyrical concept, when Azathoth was still in the band. The general frame or wish was to create a rather aggressive and direct album, while still keeping the intense dark mood of Séance. With the departure of Azathoth we needed a completely new lyrical concept and the lyrics for Eidolon where written after the music was completely composed. But the new lyrics were made to measure the music perfectly.

MI. Several members of the band are involved in another band, NONEUCLID: which one of the two bands is the priority?
V Santura. It depends whom you ask, hehe. Lets say that if I am the main driving force behind Dark Fortress, then Morean is the driving force behind Noneuclid. There are certain periods of time that are exclusively reserved for Dark Fortress, but there are also times, where we are only working on Noneuclid. At the beginning of November we will have a very important concert with Noneuclid at the Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam together with the Metropole Orchestra. This show demands for a long and intense preparation and it will be something very special in our lives. I’m really looking forwards to this.

MI. On "Baphomet", you've got a prestigious guest star, ie Tom Gabriel Fischer. Who got the idea first to have him sing on this album, he or DARK FORTRESS?
V Santura. We asked Tom if he could imagine to contribute some guest vocals on a Dark Fortress album and he liked the idea. We are very honoured and proud to have his unique voice on our new album and we are very satisfied with the result. We met Tom the first time, when we were opening for Celtic Frost on their first shows after their comeback. Celtic Frost asked us if we would like to be the support band, so we already knew, that they respect our music a lot.

MI. Eidolon is your fifth album. Would you say that, as far as the music is concerned, it is also the most representative of DARK FORTRESS's identity?
V Santura. I would say that our last three albums, Stab Wounds, Séance and Eidolon all represent Dark Fortress. I love all three albums, even though I think, that we developed with every new album and I think that Eidolon is the crown of our creation so far.

MI. Your music includes elements of Symphonic Black Metal but also the roughness of the old Norwegian Black Metal, especially in some riffs. What is your point of view about the supposed True Black Metal fanatics or bands saying that Black Metal bands thinking in terms of melodies or using keyboards are just posers?
V Santura. Do what thou wilt! That shall be the only law, especially when it comes to music! I mean, come on, nobody can tell me, how my music is supposed to sound! Black Metal initially was a very rebellious style of music, not caring about any conventions. How does it come, that parts of the scene became so fucking conservative? This is against all, that Black Metal stands for. The most important thing is the feeling, the atmosphere, no matter how you achieve it.

MI. Would you say that keyboards are necessary to create peculiar moods?
V Santura. No. They can be helpful, but they are not necessary. We use them when we feel, that we want to use them, else we don’t.

MI. As a Black Metal band, how important are corpse paintings for you?
V Santura. If you unleash all your inner demons by your music, why shouldn’t you look like one on stage? I think you can intensify the impact of your performance, when the optical aspect supports the intentions of the music and the lyrics and that’s why corpse paint is important for us!

MI. Can you tell us more about your next promo tour? Will you tour in France?
V Santura. Well, it took me a while to find the time to answer these questions and by now, the tour together with Helheim and Vulture Industries is already finished. The tour was tough, but the shows were a great success. Unfortunately our former booking agency was unable to book shows in France, so we could not play in your country. But we definitely want to play there, that’s for sure!
